NFL Preseason Picks: Saints vs Patriots Odds Week 1
Football handicappers looking for a potential Super Bowl match-up in NFL preseason picks for week 1 cannot do better than Thursday night as the New England Patriots host the New Orleans Saints. Kick-off is set for 7:35pm EST and online sportsbooks opened with the Patriots as a 1.5-point favorite in NFL betting with an over/under odds total of 35. The defending Super Bowl champion Saints will be looking to improve their defense during the preseason as it ranked in the bottom third of most significant statistical categories in the NFL last year.
Backup quarterback Chase Daniel, the former Missouri star, should see a fair amount of action in week 1 of the NFL preseason against the Pats as will Sean Canfield, who will challenge Daniel for the number two job. The Saints had a relatively quiet off season as they added only defensive end Alex Brown to the roster. Cornerback Patrick Robinson of Florida State was their top draft pick. The Patriots will want to give special attention to their running game as it ranked only 12th in NFL betting odds. Quarterback Tom Brady should see limited action against the Saints as Brian Hoyer and Jeff Rowe should get most of the reps.
The Patriots are undergoing something of a youth movement, particularly on defense, and will likely work a lot of different lineup combinations throughout the game. Among the new members of the Patriots are defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Gerard Warren along with wide receivers David Patten and Torry Holt along with tight end Alge Crumpler. New Orleans has gone 8-5 against the spread in NFL betting for the preseason including 3-1 against the board last year. New England has not been a serious preseason team under coach Bill Belichick and has gone 4-8 against the spread in exhibitions with “The Hoodie” including a break even 2-2 mark versus the line last year.
